Wages
Your right to be paid fairly and on time
Your employer must pay you on time, in full, and at least once a month. The law sets clear rules for overtime pay and requires a written pay slip.
What the law says
- You must receive a written pay slip for every payment.
- Overtime rates: first 2 extra hours per day = 30% above your normal rate; beyond that = 50% above normal; Sundays and public holidays = double pay.
- Your salary must be paid in Rwandan francs.
- Failure to pay wages on time is a violation of the Labour Code.
- The government sets a minimum wage. Your employer cannot legally pay you below it.
What you can do
- Keep records of your hours worked and all payments you receive.
- If your employer owes you wages, put your request in writing first.
- Report unpaid wages to your district Labour Inspector.
