Harassment
Your right to a safe workplace
Every worker in Rwanda has the right to a safe and respectful workplace. Harassment and abuse are illegal, and you are protected if you speak up.
What the law says
- Sexual harassment is explicitly prohibited under the Labour Code. This includes unwanted physical contact, verbal abuse, and threats.
- Psychological harassment — bullying, humiliation, intimidation — is also prohibited.
- Your employer is legally required to take action when harassment is reported.
- You cannot be dismissed for reporting harassment. Retaliation by your employer is also illegal.
What you can do
- Report the harassment to your employer or HR department in writing, and keep a copy.
- If no action is taken, contact your district Labour Inspector.
- You can file a complaint directly with MIFOTRA or take the matter to the Labour Court.
