Contracts
What your employer must put in writing
Whether you have a signed document or not, Rwandan law says you have a contract the moment you start working. Your employer must give you a written copy.
What the law says
- Your employer must provide a written contract within 7 days of you starting work.
- The contract must state: your job title, salary, working hours, and start date.
- Fixed-term contracts cannot exceed 2 years in total. After that, your employment automatically becomes permanent.
- A verbal agreement is still legally binding. 'No contract' is not an excuse.
What you can do
- Ask your employer for a written contract if you do not have one.
- Keep a signed copy of any contract you receive.
- Contact your district Labour Inspector if your employer refuses to provide a contract.
